You start out the game with 35 Gold. You can purchase more off the site with real money. You have a number of options to pay for the gold, including direct credit card purchase and Paypal, as well as a few others. Gold is used to purchase a number of enhancements, as well as show support for the makers of the game.
Gold can be traded with the system for silver. 1 gold can be exchanged for 100 silver, and 200 silver can be exchanged for 1 gold.

Gold Ban[]
In early 2008 a large volume of North American players found that they would receive a ban a number of months after purchasing Gold. They were told that they were banned for reversing their payments. It turned out that there was a bug in the Travian payment system that resulted in the failed payment even after the customer was told it was all good. This problem has since been corrected, and players that had received ban have since had their bans lifted, as well as some compensation in the form of Gold.
